The Nortegas H2SAREA project, selected as a finalist of the MWCapital Awards.
The Nortegas H2SAREA project has been selected as one of the 17 finalists in the first edition of the “MWCapital Awards: Technologies for a Sustainable Future” by Mobile World Capital Barcelona, in collaboration with GSMA Foundry and B Lab Spain. This new awards programme recognises the most innovative projects that leverage technology to drive the transition towards a more sustainable and inclusive future. Aligned with the United Nations 2030 Agenda and Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), the initiative celebrates creativity, innovation and tangible impact, supporting responsible and global digital transformation. The winners will be announced at a ceremony to be held on 12 June at the Torre Glòries in Barcelona.
The call for entries, which closed in March, attracted 157 applications from 34 countries, reflecting a strong global interest in technological solutions with a social and environmental impact. The finalists, from 11 different countries, represent a wide range of players, including start-ups, companies, public institutions, non-profit organisations, and research and academic bodies.
The objective of the H2SAREA project is to research and develop the technological solutions needed to safely distribute hydrogen and its mixes with natural gas in the existing natural gas network. To date, a 20% hydrogen blend has been successfully injected into the H2Loop research platform, built by Nortegas using ex-service materials and components. The H2Sarea consortium is made up of Nortegas, ABC Compressors, Erreka, Fidegas, H2Site and Orkli, with the collaboration of Tecnalia, the National Hydrogen Centre and Ikerlan as members of the Basque Network of Science, Technology and Innovation.
