
MUBIL Center opens its doors in Eskuzaitzeta to promote smart and sustainable mobility in the Basque Country.
The MUBIL Center has officially opened its facilities in Eskuzaitzeta (San Sebastian), consolidating Gipuzkoa and the Basque Country as a European benchmark in research, development and innovation in smart and sustainable mobility. The event was officiated by Imanol Pradales, Lehendakari /First Minister of the Basque Government, alongside Eider Mendoza, Head of the Gipuzkoa Provincial Council; Unai Andueza, Head of Economic Promotion and Strategic Projects of the Gipuzkoa Provincial Council; and Igor Villarreal, General Manager of MUBIL Fundazioa. The event brought together a large number of representatives from institutions in Gipuzkoa and the Basque Country, as well as the main players in the mobility sector, including companies, business associations, universities and leading technology centres.
The event began with an institutional presentation highlighting the strategic importance of the MUBIL Center, followed by a guided tour in which those attending were given a first-hand insight into the operation of its laboratories and the centre's unique capabilities. Located on a 48,000 m² site in Eskuzaitzeta that will house part of the MUBIL ecosystem, the MUBIL Centre, a 9,700 m² state-of-the-art technology facility built at a cost of €25 million, is designed to promote the development, validation and certification of advanced mobility solutions.
The facility houses three testing laboratories which, together with the ecosystem created around the MUBIL Centre, provide a hub of knowledge, testing capabilities and innovation that is unique in Europe. These include a hydrogen fuel cell laboratory for testing and validating hydrogen-based power generation systems, an energy storage systems laboratory and an electric powertrain laboratory. During the visit, those attending the event learned about the activities of these laboratories and saw first hand the technological capabilities of a centre that is emerging as a strategic driver of innovation for the region.
MUBIL is an open innovation ecosystem, offering a collaborative environment to help start-ups, SMEs and large companies in the development of smart and sustainable mobility solutions. Its facilities will host companies such as Battera, Lazpiur, NX, Wattson, Battbelt, Veltium, AVL and Novac, as well as technology managers CIDETEC and EPower Labs, bringing together a team of 80 professionals who will work on site. In addition, the mobility R&D units of the VICOMTECH, CIDETEC and TECNALIA technology centres will move to Eskuzaitzeta, thus strengthening Gipuzkoa's position as a European benchmark in technological capabilities and innovation in the field of mobility.
