Repsol and P2H2 run a successful pilot for lower-cost renewable hydrogen using an AEM electrolyser.

Repsol and the US company Power to Hydrogen (P2H2) have successfully validated an anion-exchange membrane (AEM) electrolysis technology for the large-scale production of renewable hydrogen, following the completion of a pilot test lasting over 1,250 hours at the All4Zero industrial innovation hub. The pilot met or exceeded performance targets across efficiency, flexibility and durability, projecting a service life of over 50,000 hours – well above current standards for this technology – whilst also achieving a hydrogen purity of up to 99.9% and delivering stable performance under the variable conditions that characterise renewable energy production. According to P2H2’s estimates, the solution could reduce the cost of hydrogen production by around 16% compared with conventional electrolysers, achieving a levelised cost of hydrogen of approximately $3.86/kg, with the potential to fall to as low as $2.82/kg in optimised renewable supply scenarios. Building on these results, both companies are looking into developing a demonstration plant with a capacity of between 500 kW and 1 MW, in line with Repsol’s target of 600 to 800 MW of renewable hydrogen capacity by 2030.
