Repsol and Enagás Renovable join forces to construct a renewable hydrogen plant in Cartagena.

Repsol has given the green light to its first 100 MW electrolyser at the industrial complex in Cartagena, Murcia. The facility will have the capacity to produce up to 15,000 tonnes of renewable hydrogen per year, which the company will use as feedstock to manufacture essential products with a lower carbon footprint, thereby taking a significant step forward in its roadmap to replace conventional hydrogen with renewable hydrogen at its industrial centres.

Given the scale of the project, the construction of this renewable hydrogen plant in Cartagena represents a technological challenge led by Repsol, in collaboration with Enagás Renovable, which has a 25% stake in the project. With an investment of more than 300 million euros, the plant is expected to be operational in 2029 and will avoid the emission of up to 167,000 tonnes of CO2 annually. The project includes the possibility that, in the future, the renewable hydrogen produced at the Cartagena plant could also be incorporated into the natural gas network and the Spanish Hydrogen Backbone Network.

Repsol is the largest producer and consumer of hydrogen in mainland Spain, accounting for 60% of national production and 4% of the hydrogen consumed in Europe. It currently has the capacity to produce around 360,000 tonnes of hydrogen per year at its industrial complexes. Enagás Renovable currently has a portfolio of 20 projects underway in Spain, focusing on renewable hydrogen and biomethane.
