H2SITE and Tecnalia participate in the European HERMES project to develop hydrogen purification technologies.

H2SITE and Tecnalia are working together with five other European organisations on the project HERMES ‘Demonstration of hydrogen purification and separation systems for renewable hydrogen-containing streams in industrial applications’, funded by the European Union under the Horizon Europe programme.

The main objective of the project is to achieve a quantum leap in purification efficiency through the use of two innovative membrane technologies: palladium-based membranes and carbon molecular sieve (CMS) membranes. Two prototypes will be developed and tested at different industrial sites, each designed to separate 100 kg/day of high-purity hydrogen from gas streams with variable hydrogen content. Both membrane types will be tested in each prototype.

The HERMES consortium, led by H2SITE, brings together seven partners from four countries, including research centres, universities and industrial players, working together to deliver clean and decentralised hydrogen solutions. The partners are H2SITE, Tecnalia, Eindhoven University of Technology, Fondazione Bruno Kessler, INTRACT, SNAM and TUPRAS.

In addition, H2SITE has announced its plans to create a European consortium with the aim of leading a project to decarbonise the maritime sector. To this end, the Basque start-up is looking for a shipowner with a vessel of at least 5,000 GT and energy requirements of 5 MW to act as a technology demonstrator for an innovative clean energy system using ammonia as fuel. The project will begin in June 2026 with a total budget of 11.25 million euros.
