The Ammogen project, in which H2SITE is a consortium partner, recognised as "Innovation of the Year” at the UK Green Business Awards 2025.

The Ammogen project, in which H2SITE is a consortium partnerhas won the "Innovation of the Year" award at the UK Green Business Awards 2025. The Ammogen consortium, which also includes Equans UK & Ireland, Gemserv, Talan Company | B Corp Certified, Tyseley Energy Park, the University of Birmingham, and Yara International, is looking to design, build, commission and operate the world's largest and most efficient ammonia-to-hydrogen conversion unit of its kind.

To deliver the security and flexibility of a future hydrogen energy system, the project addresses three challenges: the cost-effective production of hydrogen, the efficient storage of large amounts of energy in a format that enables distribution, and the use of ammonia as a high-energy-density hydrogen carrier where feasible. In addition, it seeks to encourage new policies for this technology from the UK government, as well as to capitalise on opportunities for the country in the hydrogen sector.

The project uses innovative endothermic ammonia cracking technology in a palladium membrane reactor developed by H2SITE, which provides high conversion efficiency and hydrogen suitable for a wide range of applications. This technology provides cost-effective, low-carbon hydrogen suitable for applications ranging from injection into the UK gas grid to vehicle refuelling. Cost reduction and process efficiency are made possible by integrating the ammonia conversion, recovery and purification processes into a single unit. Specifically, Ammogen will supply 200 kg/day of hydrogen to a hydrogen refuelling station located at Tyseley Energy Park (TEP).
