The technology group Wärtsilä has begun testing a new 100% hydrogen engine to power Spain's national power grid in Bermeo, the world’s first large-scale demonstration of a pure hydrogen engine. The engine in question is the Wärtsilä 31H2, which forms part of the Wärtsilä 31 platform, one of the world’s most efficient multi-fuel four-stroke engines. The plant, based on the Wärtsilä 31 model, is designed to support fast-growing, energy-intensive industries, such as data centres, manufacturing facilities and off-grid environments. This milestone has demonstrated that large-scale hydrogen engines can provide the sustainable, flexible and adjustable power needed to support future fully renewable energy systems. The company is now focusing on creating the right environment for the large-scale deployment of this technology, underpinned by decisive regulation, investment clarity and the required infrastructure.
