The technical workshop on hydrogen burners looks at solutions being developed by Basque industry and technology centres to advance industrial decarbonisation.

On 28 November, the BH2C and BASQUENERGY Cluster held a technical workshop on hydrogen burners at the EIC. Hydrogen burners are key to the decarbonisation of industry, as they allow the high calorific value of hydrogen to be exploited without emitting CO₂ at the point of consumption, directly contributing to the reduction of emissions in sectors where direct electrification is not a viable option. The event, attended by 54 people from 34 different organisations, addressed the technological challenges associated with hydrogen combustion and the solutions that industry and technology centres are developing to enable its integration.

After the opening by Marcos Suarez from Basquenergy Cluster, Isabel Álava, from Ikerlan, provided an overview of industrial heating processes where hydrogen can replace natural gas, outlining the most significant differences between burners and reviewing the landscape of burner manufacturers with hydrogen-ready industrial solutions. After this, Itsaso Auzmendi, from Sarralle, and Joaquín de Diego, from Nippon Gases, presented their companies' latest developments in H₂ & O₂-ready burners, showing some examples of applications primarily in the steel industry.

After the coffee break, Jesus M. Puelles presented the Wärtsilä plant in Bermeo, focused on engine R&D, where they validate the performance of their engines with hydrogen, ammonia and methanol. Iñigo Bejar explained the activity of E&M Combustion, which focuses on the design and manufacture of burners and combustion systems for hydrogen, with a view to helping industries decarbonise. Finally, Mª Goretti Ganzo, from Bosch, briefly explained the company's technological solutions for the entire hydrogen chain, from production to storage, distribution and end use, focusing on the use of hydrogen as a fuel in boilers.

After the event, a session of B2B meetings was organised, during which those attending had the opportunity to network with some of the speakers to explore synergies and possible collaboration.
