ArcelorMittal to invest 1.3 billion euros to produce green steel at its plant in Dunkirk, France.
The steel company ArcelorMittal has announced a forthcoming investment of 1.3 billion euros for the construction of a 2 million tonnes per year electric arc furnace at its plant in Dunkirk, France, which is scheduled to come on stream in 2029. This investment is part of a strategy designed by the company for the transition of several ArcelorMittal steelworks in Europe, replacing coal with hydrogen. The Dunkirk plant is one of the most polluting, accounting for 15% of French industry's CO2 emissions. Up to 50% of the investment will be financed through the energy saving certificate (ESC) mechanism, a French government-regulated scheme that requires energy suppliers to finance projects aimed at reducing energy consumption.
