The 100 MW electrolyser project of Petronor, awarded 160 million euros under the IPCEI Hy2Use Programme.

The Institute for the Diversification and Saving of Energy (IDAE), an organisation within the Ministry for Ecological Transition and the Demographic Challenge (MITECO), has published the final draft resolution approving the direct award of funding to the ES53 project ‘BILBAO LARGE SCALE ELECTROLYZER’.

This milestone is another administrative step towards the granting of aid under the IPCEI Hy2Use programme, in accordance with the provisions of Royal Decree 663/2024, published on 9 July 2024.

This document proposes the award of a maximum total amount of 160 million euros to BAY OF BISCAY HYDROGEN, S.L., for the construction of a renewable hydrogen production plant with an electrolysis capacity of 100 MW. The funding awarded by IDAE will cover approximately 60% of the planned total investment of 260 million euros.

The plant will make it possible to partially replace the grey hydrogen currently used at the Petronor refinery in Muskiz, between 22% and 38.8%, as well as its possible use as a raw material in the industrial sector. The project, which will begin to take shape in September this year, is expected to be operational by mid-2028.
