Petronor begins work on its 100 MW electrolyser, with an initial investment of 292 million euros.

Petronor has announced the start of work on the 100 MW electrolyser at its Muskiz refinery in Bizkaia. The pressurised alkaline electrolyser to be supplied by Sunfire, the initial investment for which amounts to 292 million euros, will have the capacity to produce up to 15,000 tonnes of renewable hydrogen per year, mainly for use in the refinery's own processes. The electrolyser will finally come into operation in 2029.

Recognised by the European Commission as an IPCEI, the project will be supported by the Spanish Government and is set to be awarded 160 million euros from NextGenerationEU funds under the Recovery, Transformation and Resilience Plan. Imanol Pradales, Lehendakari / First Minister of the Regional Basque Government, visited the Muskiz facilities to learn more about Petronor's various projects and planned investments. This is Petronor's third electrolyser, following a 2.5 MW unit already up and running and a second 10 MW electrolyser scheduled to be operational in 2027 in the Port of Bilbao.
