The Basque Country and the Netherlands discuss in Bilbao the challenges facing green hydrogen.

Institutional and business representatives from the Netherlands and the Basque Country met at the Torre Iberdrola in Bilbao on 8 March to discuss the main challenges facing the development of green hydrogen. The event was organised by the SPRI Group and Basque Trade & Investment, in conjunction with the Embassy of the Netherlands in Spain and KPMG.

Under the title "Demand creation and capacity building and challenges for the development of the Green Hydrogen Ecosystem between Spain and The Netherlands", the session explored the challenges facing cooperation between the two countries in the promotion of green hydrogen, such as scalability and regulatory and governmental support.

In addition, the event addressed how to upgrade skills in the production and use of green hydrogen, promoting sustainable growth and equal opportunities and benefits, with the participation of Cristina Oyón, Director of Technology, Innovation and Sustainability at the SPRI Group; Izaskun Gorostiaga, Chief Strategy Officer at Nortegas, on behalf of the Basque Hydrogen Corridor; Dr. Samira Farahani, International Affairs Coordinator at the NL Hydrogen Association; Anne Geurts, International Relations Officer of the Port of Rotterdam; and Helmie Botter, Business Development Manager at Hydrogen Gasunie.

The conference was held to coincide with the European Hydrogen Energy Conference (EHEC) at the Bilbao Exhibition Center (BEC), and in a context in which the Basque Country and the Netherlands are collaborating to advance towards sustainability and the transition to cleaner energies.

At the end of 2023, the Port of Bilbao, the Port of Amsterdam, Duisport, EVE, Petronor, Evos Amsterdam and Zenith Energy Terminals signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) that established the framework for cooperation to develop an intra-European corridor for renewable hydrogen, connecting Spain, the Netherlands and Germany.
