Tecnalia sets up a laboratory to develop hydrogen technologies.

Tecnalia has set up a laboratory to develop technologies for the production, storage, transport, distribution, use and safety of hydrogen, with facilities prepared for research and validation and scaling up to accelerate the industrialisation of these technologies.

The different facilities of the Hydrogen Laboratory, where 50+ projects are currently being taken forward, cover a surface area of over 1,000 square metres, and have required an investment in excess of 5 million euros. In terms of hydrogen production, the laboratory, located in the Science and Technology Park of Gipuzkoa, is equipped to test all available technologies for both electrolysers and fuel cells. At the same time, Tecnalia is developing technologies such as new generation electrolysis and membrane reactors to produce green hydrogen at a competitive cost.

With regard to storage, the research centre is working on alternative carrier technologies which would enable large quantities of hydrogen to be transported over long distances at a competitive cost and in a sustainable manner. It is also investigating the compatibility of different materials in contact with hydrogen gas at high pressure for pipelines, storage tanks and salt caverns for underground storage. In terms of safety, the centre is working on the development of sensors for hydrogen leak detection and associated risk analysis, as well as advanced hydrogen-based solutions for sustainable mobility, vehicle propulsion systems and combustion systems applied to other industries such as steelmaking.
