José Ignacio Zudaire, President of the BH2C, highlights new pathways for innovation in green hydrogen supply in the "Guide to innovation in the Basque Country 2023".

In the "Guide to innovation in the Basque Country 2023", recently published by Estrategia Empresarial, José Ignacio Zudaire, President of the Basque Hydrogen Corridor (BH2C), outlines the challenges of green hydrogen in the Basque Country and pinpoints the strengths of the region in terms of innovation. Mr. Zudaire highlights the work of the BH2C, which brings together the entire Basque hydrogen value chain with a common goal: to decarbonise Basque industry, creating an ecosystem that leverages the development of the hydrogen economy to provide sustainable momentum for industry and technology in the Basque Country.

In the publication, the President of the BH2C assures that the Basque Country has an exceptional ecosystem to lead the current energy challenge: green hydrogen as an energy carrier, a strategic geographical position, with an industrial port and consolidated gas infrastructure, driver companies, a strong industrial fabric, and a key factor: enabler technology and people expertise.

Following the opening of the EIC (Energy Intelligence Center) as an essential driver to give shape to a technological and industrial ecosystem geared towards new fuels and developments, Mr. Zudaire draws attention to the commissioning of the world's first palladium alloy membrane manufacturing plant, H2Site, to obtain hydrogen from ammonia or methanol; the launch of the H2Sarea project by Nortegas, which promotes the injection of green hydrogen into the current natural gas network; the manufacture of the first hydrogen-powered coach prototype by Irizar; and the start-up by Petronor of the first 2.5 MW electrolyser in the Basque Country.

Finally, Mr Zudaire singles out three essential elements that the Basque Country boasts in terms of green hydrogen innovation: its commitment to decarbonisation, its commitment to its own resources and the accessibility of hydrogen to generate new supply.
