Petronor begins construction of the 10 MW electrolyser in the Port of Bilbao.
Petronor is moving forward with the commissioning of its 10 MW electrolyser to be set up in the Port of Bilbao. With an investment of 44 million euros, the project is being developed through the company Basque Hydrogen, led by Petronor and with EVE / the Basque Energy Agency (24.5%) and Enagás Renovable (24.5%) as co-partners to build and operate the electrolyser. A tender was launched for the supply of the electrolyser and was awarded to the German company Sunfire. The project engineering is being carried out by Technip, under the supervision of the Repsol engineering department.
The electrolyser will mainly be used to supply renewable hydrogen and oxygen to the synthetic fuel (e-fuels) demo plant, where Aramco Europe and Petronor are co-partners, which is also being built in the Port of Bilbao. It will also supply surplus renewable hydrogen to Petronor through a pipeline linking the Port of Bilbao and the refinery. In the future, the possibility of supplying hydrogen and oxygen to other industrial customers in the port will be explored.
The project is now in the construction phase, with equipment arriving in Bilbao before the summer and assembly work beginning, which will take around six months. The facility is scheduled to come on stream in the first half of 2026, once the power line to supply the plant has been completed.
