The Hydrogen and Renewable Fuels Sector Forum analyses how the sector is moving towards a new phase characterised by project implementation.

On Tuesday 16 June, the BASQUENERGY Cluster held a new meeting of the Hydrogen and Renewable Fuels Sector Forum, coordinated by Petronor and organised in collaboration with ACICAE-Basque Country Automotive Cluster, ACLIMA-Basque Environment Cluster, the Mobility and Logistics Cluster, FMV-Basque Maritime Forum, HEGAN-Basque Aerospace Cluster, MAFEX-Association of the Spanish Railway Industry and SIDEREX-Cluster Association of Steelworks, at the Energy Intelligence Center (EIC). The event was opened by Manu Núñez, Deputy CEO of Petronor, and Marcos Suárez, head of the area in question at the BASQUENERGY Cluster, and continued with a presentation from Txetxu Arzuaga, Director of Petronor Innovation, who outlined the progress of the “Renewable Fuels Hub” Transformative Project led by Petronor, highlighting the role of hydrogen and renewable fuels in the decarbonisation of hard-to-abate sectors.

After this, Daniel Fraile, Chief Policy & Markets Officer at Hydrogen Europe, provided an update on the European hydrogen market and regulatory framework, and highlighted how the sector is moving towards a more mature phase. The subsequent round-table discussion, moderated by José I. Hormaeche, General Director of the BASQUENERGY Cluster, took as its starting point one of the questions raised by the International Energy Agency (IEA) in its Energy Technology Perspectives 2026 report: “Has the hydrogen bubble burst?”. The panellists in this discussion were Daniel Fraile, Maribel Rodríguez (Head of Hydrogen at Repsol) and Aitor Arzuaga (President of the BH2C).

The event continued with a presentation of the Hub COnet2 Norte project by Elena Fernández, project manager at Enagás, aimed at developing a CO₂ transport infrastructure in collaboration with emitters and other organisations in the value chain. This was followed by a presentation by Christian Blanco, from Boslan, part of Accenture, who outlined the latest developments in the Hazitek HYNNOVA project: “Modular design and efficient and safe management of high-capacity renewable hydrogen production plants”. To conclude, Nerea Guinea provided an overview of the internationalisation activities being taken forward by the BASQUENERGY Cluster.
