The era of green hydrogen in the Basque Country.

The inauguration in 2023 of the first electrolyser installed in the Basque Country is a key milestone in the progress towards energy transition. The electrolyser, housed on-site at the Petronor refinery, has a power output of 2.5 MW and has required an investment of 11 million euros.

The electrolyser supplies green hydrogen to the Energy Intelligence Center (EIC), the company's new headquarters, located on the Abanto Campus of the Basque Country Technology Park. This industrial complex, which is connected to the refinery by a hydrogen pipeline laid by Nortegas, will be the centre of a true hydrogen hub.

In addition to housing the offices of Petronor-Repsol subsidiaries, the EIC will be home to a number of laboratories and companies in the energy sector, including Vicinay, Tubacex, Ampo and Tubos Reunidos. A hydrogen refuelling station, the first in the Basque Country, has been set up at the EIC to supply both light and heavy vehicles, whilst other hydrogen refuelling stations are planned to be set up in places of strategic importance throughout the Basque Country over the next few years.

The hydrogen will be transported from Abanto to these parts of the Basque Country by lorry. The electrolyser and all the initiatives to be taken forward at the Abanto Campus are part of the Basque Hydrogen Corridor, a consortium promoted by Petronor and comprising over 70 public and private organisations, with a view to mobilising more than 1.5 billion euros by 2026 to move towards a greener productive economy.
