Project description
This project consists of a technical and economic research study for the design and construction of a pilot hydrogen storage plant in salt caverns, with a view to determining the viability and scalability of the initiative as a system to provide greater flexibility taking into account the variables of green hydrogen production and consumption.
To this end, a 3-year period for research, design and selection of the pilot site is proposed (the research phase). If the results of this initial phase are favourable from a technical and economic point of view, the second phase will consist of a 2-year period for the construction and start-up of the pilot plant (the execution phase). The geographical area under study will be in the Basque-Cantabrian basin on account of the specific characteristics that make it suitable, e.g. its proximity to the coast, and the renewable power generation capacity in the area.

Impacto medioambiental
This project not only contributes to the production of green H2 and CO2 reduction, but also to the circular economy, since instead of treating the brine generated through salt dissolution during the construction of the salt cavern as waste,, it will be sold to the chemical industry operating in the same geographical area as the project, where it is used it as a raw material for its processes.
