Project description

The hydrogen distribution pipeline infrastructure project in Bizkaia is designed to enable an efficient connection of BH2C hydrogen production and end consumption points. The idea is to avoid having to build all the hydrogen distribution infrastructure from scratch, and only to build that which is strictly necessary, either for dedicated use or for access to the current gas network where it is blended with natural gas, enabling hydrogen to be commercialised also through the sale of guarantees of origin and to maximise its competitiveness in the energy mix.

The proposed project is pioneer in Spain in the field of hydrogen distribution infrastructure development, and will establish Bizkaia as a benchmark in decarbonisation both nationally and internationally.

Impacto medioambiental

Injecting hydrogen and blending it into existing natural gas networks makes an efficient contribution to the energy transition, reducing the costs of developing new power infrastructure and enabling the decarbonisation of hard-to-abate sectors. In other words, it maximises the potential of existing infrastructure by giving it a different use and extending its useful life.

Furthermore, the availability of the existing and widespread gas system infrastructure enables a gradual and modulated transition for all segments, and makes it easier to achieve the goal of economies of scale sooner rather than later. This is attributable to the fact that a large part of the existing natural gas distribution infrastructure and consumer equipment is reusable, so transformation costs are substantially lower than the cost of setting up a new network from scratch.
