HY.FIVE HYDROGEN, the company which develops projects for the generation, storage, transport and uptake of green hydrogen, joins the Basque Hydrogen Corridor (BH2C).

HY.FIVE HYDROGEN joins the BH2C as BenortH2 project developer and majority partner. The BenortH2 green hydrogen plant in Bizkaia is pioneer in adapting traditional energy facilities for their decarbonisation and in integrating other uses of hydrogen for industry and mobility. HY.FIVE HYDROGEN is involved in this project alongside Bizkaia Energía (infrastructure, offtaker), CCI (commodities trader), Nortegas (gas distribution network operator), Garbiker (hydrogen use in mobility), Sener (engineering) and White Summit Capital (financial structuring, sole shareholder of HY.FIVE).

The BenortH2 project is housed inside the Bizkaia Energía Combined Cycle plant in Amorebieta and consists of a hydrogen production plant using electrolysers, with a storage and compression system and delivery to the final offtakers. Power will be supplied via grid-sourced renewable energy through a virtual PPA, and the green hydrogen generated will be used as a replacement fuel for natural gas in the decarbonisation of the combined cycle plant and for mobility and local industry. The project will be taken forward in three phases:

- Phase 1: 5 MW of electrolysers, with 3,500 kg of H2 storage for consumption in the combined cycle plant and for private fleets of heavy vehicles.

- Phase 2: 15 MW of electrolysers, for increased consumption of hydrogen in the combined cycle power plant, for other industrial customers in the area and for mobility purposes.

- Phase 3: 200 MW of electrolysers, for a total production of around 16,000 tonnes of renewable hydrogen per year for other uses and export.

Within the scope of these subsequent phases, provision has been made to collaborate with industry in the area to adapt consumption and generate new demand. Furthermore, support will be given to converting fleets of transport and other such special vehicles, investing in new hydrogen distribution infrastructures with hydrogen refuelling stations, direct or virtual physical delivery to customers, and a specific pipeline connection to the Nortegas network for blending with natural gas.

The BenortH2 Green Hydrogen plant is the first plant of its kind in the Basque Country and Spain.

Within the BH2C, the BenortH2 project is included in Vertical 1: Production.
