Irizar e-mobility to use recycled aluminium produced with green hydrogen in their electric vehicles.

Irizar e-mobility will use carbon-free recycled aluminium produced with green hydrogen for the bodywork of its electric buses. The company from Gipuzkoa, which specialises in complete electromobility solutions through the manufacture of 100% electric vehicles and their related infrastructure, has reached an agreement with Hydro, a leading company in the aluminium sector, to supply it with this material for use in its zero-emission vehicles.

This new material was obtained following an experiment at the aluminium recycling smelter, where natural gas, which is normally used as fuel, was replaced by green hydrogen. As a result, Hydro managed to obtain recycled aluminium using green hydrogen as a feedstock at its extrusion plant in Irurtzun, Navarre. Since then, the quality of the resultant aluminium has undergone extensive testing to ensure it meets the strictest requirements for extrusion, manufacture and industrial use by Irizar.

After confirming that green hydrogen can replace the fossil fuels used until now in the aluminium industry, the resulting recycled aluminium "enables a material to be obtained with a lower environmental impact during its production, as each cubic metre of natural gas replaced by hydrogen during the combustion process avoids the emission of 2.15 kilos of carbon dioxide into the atmosphere".
