CAF-Solaris awarded a contract in Germany to supply 52 hydrogen buses, the largest contract the company has secured to date with this technology.

The German operator Rebus Regionalbus Rostock, based in Güstrow and responsible for the management of public transport in the Rostock region of northern Germany, has signed an agreement with Solaris for the supply of 52 Solaris Urbino hydrogen buses, five of which are 18-metre articulated vehicles. This is a significant milestone for Solaris, as it is the largest contract the company has secured to date for hydrogen-powered vehicles.

Delivery of the vehicles is scheduled to be completed by the end of 2024. One of the goals of the regional government's mobility policy is to base the public transport system in the county of Rostock on hydrogen technology within the next few years, and this contract goes a significant way towards achieving that.

In addition to the supply of the new buses, the contract includes the construction of two hydrogen refuelling stations at two depots in the cities of Güstrow and Bad Doberan. The vehicles will be equipped with state-of-the-art hydrogen fuel cells in the two bus models on order: 70 kW in the 12-metre bus version and 100 kW in the case of the articulated bus. They will also be equipped with a Solaris High Power traction battery, the function of which will be to provide back-up for the fuel cell at times of peak energy demand of the vehicle.
