Sarralle launches first ladle preheater capable of running entirely on green hydrogen.

Sarralle has equipped a Spanish steel mill with green hydrogen technology in the steelmaking process. The technology supplier has launched the first ladle preheater capable of running entirely on green hydrogen, achieving zero CO2 emissions in this ladle.

The installation of this ladle preheater capable of using green hydrogen as a power source is a highly innovative project, replacing the existing burner that used natural gas as fuel with an oxy-combustion burner that can use 100% H2 as fuel, achieving zero CO2 emissions in the ladle as only water vapour is generated in the combustion of green hydrogen. A new dual burner has been installed, capable of running on natural gas or on a blend of natural gas and hydrogen.

On the path to achieving decarbonisation, the project demonstrates that the new hydrogen-oxygen burners can reproduce the usual ladle preheating ramps but with zero CO2 emissions.
