The Working Community of the Pyrenees will support deployment of the hydrogen economy.

The Lehendakari (First Minister of the Basque Government) has led the 40th Plenary Council Meeting of the Working Community of the Pyrenees (CTP), the current chair of which is the Basque Country. In the course of the meeting, held in Arantzazu, the Plenary Council adopted a declaration stating, amongst other things, its disagreement with the closure for the last year or more of eight border crossings in the Pyrenees, and its commitment to push for a protocol of trans-Pyrenean cooperation for the promotion of renewable hydrogen.

The session was attended by delegations from New Aquitaine, Occitania, Aragon, Catalonia, Navarre, the Basque Country and the Principality of Andorra.

The Declaration of Arantzazu issued by the Plenary Council states the following:

  • Support for the ongoing negotiations between the different States to develop trans-Pyrenean interconnection infrastructure that will contribute to diversifying energy supply sources, as well as to promoting decarbonisation through the use of renewable energy sources, such as green hydrogen and biomethane. It also calls for the Regions and Autonomous Communities to be involved in the decision-making process.
  • Commitment to pushing for the adoption of a trans-Pyrenean cooperation protocol for the promotion of renewable hydrogen, with the aim of creating a cross-border space for the deployment of the hydrogen economy, strengthening the positions of the different regions and enabling them to deliver the decarbonisation targets set in the national and European strategies.
