Bizkaibus starts testing a hydrogen-powered bus.

The service will incorporate this year 73 new hybrid vehicles and a further six electric vehicles, previously tested, to update and replace a quarter of the fleet.

Bizkaibus has recently started a one-week field test on a new hydrogen-powered bus on the A3141 line between Trapagaran and Cruces. Miguel Ángel Gómez Viar, Head of the Department of Transport and Sustainable Mobility in the Provincial Council of Bizkaia, explained this Friday that the objective is to check if the characteristics of the bus are suited to the orography of Bizkaia and the requirements of the service. This same type of road testing has been done in the past with electric buses. "It's about getting it right with what we are buying and what is useful".

Mr. Gómez Viar explained that 73 new hybrid vehicles and six fully electric vehicles are planned to be commissioned this year, accounting for a quarter of the total fleet of Bizkaibus with 336 buses and 106 lines. He also pointed out that this represents a "major effort", after tests carried out some time ago with these systems had already shown that they were favorable for certain services, and highlighted that it takes about a year from the time the vehicles are ordered until they are available with all the necessary requirements, and even more so in the current situation of conflict.
